Winter Running – Winter Obstacle Course

So, how goes the winter running now that our big snow storm of 2012  is a distant memory….NOT!  

With over 16 inches of snow in the main event, not a distant memory at all.

Here it is over two weeks later, and there are still quite a few tricky winter obstacles for me to be on the alert for whilst on my winter runs. One very obvious obstacle is ice in all its forms – from black ice to sleet falling from the sky to ice puddles and everything in between.

The morning temps have been in the mid 20’s F, so I know there is going to be ice when I run to work.

And by the time the afternoon rolls around, the temperatures have jumped up a bit into the high 30’s F to sometimes even low 40’s F. So we do have a significant amount of melting of the enormous amounts of snow we received.  Which means winter running is defined as slushy and sloppy in the afternoons, and treacherous and slick in the a.m.

Snow berms created by the plows are another potential tripping hazard. For me it is sometimes hard to see how big, and wide they are when trying to cross over them to get to the street crossing. But I use my white cane to poke and prod at them until I feel I can step on and over them safely.

Of course, the constant freezing and thawing and rain and freezing and thawing and snow always keeps the footing a question mark. Now that I am able to run in the mornings again, I have been wearing my cleats to help keep me upright.

With all of the obstacles thrown at me recently, it kind of reminds me of that ABC show “Wipeout” where they throw obstacle after hazard after spine-jarring spill at the contestants who actually volunteer for that kind of abuse.  (I imagine chiropractors can’t even watch that show for the horror of the trauma voluntarily imposed upon their bodies.)

There is one obstacle that threw me for a loop a few mornings ago.  As I was running down the very clear and easy-to-navigate bike path across town, I noticed that there was some snow in the middle of the path.

Well since I don’t have much 3D vision left, it is always best that I go around things in the path, but for some reason, I don’t know what it is about seeing something, and feeling I have to step on it?

But can you say, “Snow Boulder?”

Yep, a huge chunk of snow had broken off from the large snow bank along the side of the path and rolled right into the middle of the trail.

But I didn’t see it that way. I just saw a white patch on the black asphalt – and of course, I was thinking it was just snow on the trail – not a monstrous ball of snow standing sentry in the middle of the path.

Luckily for me it was so big, I just kind of fell on top of it. Yes, I know you can visualize it, kind of belly flat across it, arms flailing, very startled and amazed that this thing could just kind of sneak up and do me that way.

So I casually-self-consciously stood up, wondering whether anyone got to see such a fabulous display of grace and style, nothing battered but my fantasy of myself as a graceful gazelle, bounding beautifully across the open plains.

But it’s the small snow/ice chunks that are more dangerous to my life and limb, as those ones will send me flying in a more impactful way!

Anyway, I used my Herculean strength and rolled the icy snow boulder off the path, so no one else would fall victim to its hypnotic beckoning to run straight into it.

Yes, I admit – it was larger than life.

Slogging through Ice Puddles

I just couldn’t stand it anymore…it didn’t matter what the weather was like, I had to get outside and run this past week!  Even though the path I use still had some snow cover and patches of ice in shaded areas, I simply decided that it didn’t matter. If it was too bad, I would just turn around and head back home.

As it turned out, I landed in an ice puddle just as I exited our alley!  Well, I didn’t have to try and avoid puddles any more since my feet were now members of the “Polar Bear Club”. 

It felt so great to be outside again: breathing in the fresh, crisp winter air.  There was one place on the trail that could have been a child’s wading pool…and I managed to run right through the middle of it, splashing freezing cold water onto the front of my running tights.  Luckily, the weather was in the high 30’s to low 40’s.  I just gave a loud yelp and vowed not to hit it again on the way back!

It had been about 10 days since my last outdoor run, and I was more than ready.  The day before I had run on the treadmill for 40 minutes, and because of my limited eyesight and elusive balance, I had to hold onto the treadmill as I ran. This makes running on the treadmill, which is already a tedious task, more trouble than it’s worth. I would rather slog through ice puddles than run on a treadmill any day!

So you don’t have to let a few ice puddles get in the way of having a great run – I certainly didn’t. :)

This winter is starting out with a bang! I’ve been spoiled the past couple of years with relatively good winter running weather. But this year, so far there’s been lots of snow and cold temperatures since mid December. Being a blind runner and requiring a clear controlled path to run on, as long as there is snow and/or ice on my winter running trail, I’m forced to find different ways to get my cardio workout in and my heart pumping.

As mentioned in my blog from the other day “The Dreaded Treadmill,” I use running on a treadmill at the gym to compensate for not being able to run outside. And up until a few days ago, I had also been shoveling lots of snow, and that certainly gets my blood pumping!

But by far, the biggest reason I really love running is because I can be outside. I love being outdoors, running at a comfortable pace. I’m not too much into running fast or doing hill work; I just like to run. And it’s incredible when I’m in “the zone”, that cool spot where everything is working in unison…my breathing is in sync with my stride…I feel like I could just run forever. But unfortunately I’ve never been able to hit “the zone” on the treadmill. Maybe that’s because I just haven’t given it a chance, but I personally believe it’s because the treadmill surface is not as forgiving as running on the ground. Plus, there’s no variation as it just keeps you running at a consistent pace.

When I am able to run outside during the winter, there are a few things I do to make sure that my winter run is as safe and comfortable as possible. To start with, I tend to run in temps above 20F degrees. Primarily because when it’s colder than that, I have to use a scarf or something over my mouth to warm the air before it hits my lungs. I find it too constricting and a bit claustrophobic, not to mention the material gets all wet from the moisture from my breath, and then I get chilled from it touching my neck.

The other reason I avoid temps below 20F is my inability to run for long distances since the longer I’m out in that kind of cold, the harder it is to keep my body warm.

So when everything is aligned, the temperature is right and my winter running path is clear, I will venture out for a winter run. I always dress in layers. This includes a long-sleeve running shirt and my running jacket. I bring along a fleece hat and Turtle Fur neck wrap, along with my running gloves. I wear my running tights, and sometimes I will put on a pair of spandex running shorts under them for extra warmth for my thighs, as I need to keep my leg muscles warm. I prefer to have a few extra items to wear and carry then to not have them with me and end up getting chilled.

One of the nice things for me is that the controlled path I run on is asphalt. So when the sun is out, the snow melts fairly quickly. This gives me a black running surface, and the snow provides a white border, and because of the high contrast of black against white, it makes it much easier for me to see the path.

Some of my favorite runs have been winter runs. There is just something about a winter sun that makes me feel nostalgic. I still haven’t quite figured it out, but I get this positive feeling of the past for just a split second then it’s gone, but the general feeling remains and I feel happy and content.

My winter runs are usually shorter than and not as frequent as in other seasons, so I use the winter months to let my body recover from my more strenuous training seasons.

One thing that I need to remember while running in winter is to keep hydrated, as well as eating to replenish my glycogen stores after a winter run. It’s easier to forget, as I’m not as thirsty or hungry. But even though it’s winter, I am still burning energy and sweating.

I always keep my belly covered up with a Turtle Fur neck warmer. This keeps my core from getting cold and allows me to run longer as I don’t get chilled as readily.

In the winter, my long runs tend to be about 5 to 6 miles depending on how well the trail is maintained. There have been times when I have turned around and run the same stretch of path over again because it was already cleared of the snow and ice, just to get my miles in.
I’m hoping by mid January to be able to forego running on a treadmill and be able to do my winter running outside again. And even if it is just for a couple of days at a time in between the colder or snowier spells, that will be enough to keep me from getting cabin…err gym fever.
